There are a lot of mixed emotions about the at home HIV
test.
Some believe it’s a great idea to give people the freedom
and privacy to take the test in the comfort of their own home. Others believe that
is it a bad idea and some may commit suicide in the result of a positive result.
There is misconception that some receives their positive test results and
counseling is offered right on the spot, I too was under this impression until
fellow AIDS Activist Masonia Traylor informed me otherwise. Some programs in
different cities may offer counseling but a majority do not, you are given your
results and the rest is up to you to figure out. Others have expressed their
concern about someone testing positive and there is no record for the health
department to enforce that an HIV positive individual disclose their status to
their sexual partner. This is another misconception; the health department
cannot make anyone share their HIV status that goes along with personal responsibility.
If anything the number of positive results from a health department collected is
used for data and statistics, overall I did not see a problem with the at home
HIV test. The biggest concern people have when going for an HIV test is their
privacy, I believe if a person is willing to pay for the HIV test they will
also move forward with taking care of their health. I honestly see no
difference between an at home pregnancy test and the at home HIV test…
